INDIANAPOLIS — April 21, 2017 — High Alpha, a leading venture studio based in Indianapolis, hosted 14 members of the Indiana University Data Science Club on the student organization's inaugural trip to Indianapolis. Company visit introduces IU Data Science Club to Indiana’s first venture studio High Alpha explained its innovation model, provided a tour of their facilities, introduced students to some of their portfolio companies, and opened time up for a happy hour networking event. The students were grateful for this opportunity. Brian Trippi, Treasurer of the Data Science Club, enjoyed the opportunity to interact with “smart, successful entrepreneurs who are dedicated to building a hub of technological innovation in Indianapolis”, and Saurabh Kumar, the club’s Director of Technical Development, sees the event as “a stepping stone to future collaborations between us.” High Alpha likewise was excited to host the Data Science Club. “High Alpha has been deepening our relationship with IU over the last two years,” said Ryan Larcom, High Alpha Director of Operations. “We continue to be impressed by the caliber of the students and hope, through our joint efforts, that more students will become excited about careers in the tech industry and remaining in Indianapolis after graduation.” The students and High Alpha discussed ways that they support each other which led to an agreement to explore a consulting project through the Indiana University Data Science Consulting Club, a network of data science graduate students who are working together to build applied data science skills by consulting with partners from academia and industry on a wide range of project-based learning experiences. “This summer, we are piloting a project with the IU Data Science Consulting Club that will really help to accelerate our early-stage companies’ machine learning efforts,” said Mark Clerkin, Data Scientist at High Alpha. “The students will be able to provide meaningful work to companies that would not otherwise have access to data scientists.” Moreover, Charlene Tay, a leader and co-founder of the Consulting Club, views this collaboration as a great opportunity for data science students to apply knowledge and technical skills gained from the classroom onto interesting and impactful projects. Nick Hotz, President of the Data Science Club, believes that “this is the start of one of many great collaborative relationships between students and the Indy tech community. The club looks forward to fostering this relationship with High Alpha and to developing additional partnerships with firms across Indianapolis.” Another visit to High Alpha and other Indy firms is being scheduled for the fall semester.
